The universe was on our side this week at Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials, Utah, USA. After two years of chasing gremlins in the complicated powertrain that contains two battery packs, four (1!) motor controllers and four motors, it was finally all working.
We made a total of four runs during the event: a shakedown run at 194 mph, then 215 mph and 210 mph, and finally a 246.247 mph average run with a top speed of 250.709 mph (403 km/h). That last run gave us the top speed of the event! That’s quite an accomplishment.
The Green Envy and I are still getting to know each other, and we are solving problems as they arise. The last run was only at 65% throttle, and at the top speed we used 280 kW (380 HP). We should have at least twice as much horsepower available. The computer says it is a 300+ mph bike, but we don’t race a computer, and there is a big difference between theory and practice. Every little component has to work perfectly to set a record. Our next goal is to reach 284 mph and take back the bragging rights for the world’s fastest electric motorcycle.
We had some very unexpected problems this week. For example, the new brake chutes I bought are way too large. When I deployed them at 220 mph the hit was so hard that my eyeballs almost end up on the windshield. You can easily realize that it won’t be a good thing at 284 mph. I currently only have one chute in my possession suitable for 280+ mph, and I need at least two and preferably three so I have backups in case the first one fails for some reason. We also have some some other minor things that also need to be fixed before we can go faster, so we called it a wrap at 250 mph for this time.
This year’s Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials is the best salt racing event we have ever been to. Super well organized and ran like clockwork. I also had an absolute fabulous crew in Dave, Martin, Jenny and Kent. And my husband Bill, of course. Dave came in from Northern Maine, and Martin and Jenny came all the way from Australia. I couldn’t ask for a better team!
The Green Envy is now cleaned, winterized and stored away in a safe location near the Bonneville Salt Flats. We will be back again in 2027 for new record attempts! 😀
